Oh my gosh... I can't believe I found this. I used to watch this all the time as a kid. Though I don't really recall on what. Maybe my Mom had it on a VHS or something? I totally geeked out watching this. I remember every bit!
Watching it again though...I guess as a kid myself, I never realized it was the fantasy of two starving little children. It's actually really sad...and still happens today. Unfortunately, a lot of children don't wake up to a feast.

From 3rd grade til senior year in High school, I have had dental work in my mouth. You name it, I've had it. Braces, pallet expander, bottom ex panders, bands, head gear, retainers, even jaw surgery. As you can see in the top two collection of images, I had a severe open bite. This is when I brought my teeth together, the molars hit but the front was wide open. Jaw surgery fixed that. But up til that point, they had to fix everything else. I have to say a HUGE thanks to my parents for paying for everything...my teeth would've fallen out by the age of 40 otherwise.

I absolutely adore this. These two lovers were found in Italy and their bodies are estimated to be about 6,000 years old. Not only did this couple apparently experience love as we know it, but the society around them, primitive as they may have been by our standards, honoring that love by burying them together locked in one another's arms.
Reports from the grave site indicate that, given the condition of their teeth, they were young, probably in their early twenties. Preliminary examination did not reveal any sign of violence thereby ruling out some sort of ritual sacrifice.
Further adding to the aura of romantic love surrounding the discovery, they were found in the Italian city of Mantua which is located about 25 miles south of Verona which was the setting for Shakespeare's romantic play Romeo and Juliet in which the two young lovers are finally united in death.

"I’ve hired a bunch of people to do art for some of my largest games, I thought I would give a little insight on what do when hiring yourself.

How to find an artist:

I recommend looking through art sites such as Deviantart for an artist which suits your taste, or any other site that has a decent art community such as Newgrounds. There’s a few reasons you want to find an artist this way. First of all, they’re cheaper. These guys aren’t used to making a lot of money for their work so they will be more appreciative of the chance even if they are being payed slightly less than what professionals are payed. Second of all, they’re better. The quality of art you can find through this method is pretty amazing, and the vast amount of artists guarantee you will find something that suits your tastes and needs. Unless you have a specific price you want to pay in mind, ask THEM what they are willing to charge for the project. This usually causes people to give offers that are lower than what you normally pay, and will make them happy.

How NOT to find an artist:

Do not look for either professional artists, or an artist that has done a lot of game design work in the past. The problem with artists who do this as their full time job is that they’re usually expensive. Compared to what you can find through art sites, these guys tend to cost an arm and a leg. Artists who have done a lot of game design work are also bad for a similar reason, they know how much flash games can earn so they expect a decent percentage of the profit. It’s ridiculous to pay something 50% of a sponsorship when you can find someone else who would accept $500 for the same job. When your game sells for $10,000, the difference in cost is a multitude of 10.

Artist payment:

Make it clear to whomever you hire that they will not be payed until ALL the work is completed, unless it is completed by a predefined date, and unless it matches or exceeds expectations. Sometimes I have an issues getting all of these things, but if you give someone a job they’re expected to treat it as so even if they’re just a hobbyist. Paying prior to the completion of the project is a bad idea for several reasons. Only paying for the finished work encourages the artist to finish their job faster, if you pay up front the artist has no motivation to finish quickly. Similarly, if you pay up front the artist could disappear and you may never get what you payed for!

Keep them in the dark:

This relates back to what I talked about earlier. If an artist knows how much their artwork will increase the value of the game they will then feel they deserve that amount of money. This is not how a market economy works, you hire whoever is able to do the best job for the lowest amount of money, anything else is a loss of money on your end.

Timelines:

Give strict dates about when you need the art done (even if you don’t) and give consequences by deduction in pay if the art is not completed by the date. Unless the person you’ve hired happens to be very punctual, you will need strong motivation to make sure they finish the art in a timely manner. Try to only hire people ages 18+ (I may sound a little hypocritical here), kids are generally less reliable and have more IRL things come up that they can’t control. I’ve had several bad experiences with this."

For those who need to be brought up to speed, I intern at a daycare for the summer as an art teacher. Long story short, we are hosting an art show at the end of the summer where the kids can present their work. I made the poster for the event and you can view it here.

Well yesterday was my first session with the kids at Ebenezer Daycare. I was surprised at how quickly I got into the swing of it. When I walked in, the kids asked, "Are you the artist?" It was too cute!
So the first little project was just an intro. I wanted the kids to draw themselves and some or one of their hobbies. When I asked the kids "What can you tell about me from this picture?" These were some of the replies:

"You watch Pokemon? Really?"
me: "Of course! One of the best things about being an artist is that you can still watch cartoons."

"You like pizza!"
me: "Well...that's actually a slice of cheese. I work at a cheese store. But yea, I love pizza too!"

"You like pencils."
me: "Yep! I love drawing."

"Did you really draw that by yourself?"
me: "Yes I did!" :)

Resemblance? Queen and Killers

Something interesting that I noticed today is that a Killers music video is strangely similar to one of Queen's music videos. Maybe it's a stretch, I'm not sure..but does anyone else see the resemblance? Is it coincidence? Both have wacky red outfits with feathers and both are set in a strange mascaraed ball.

Girl Scout Cookie Box Redesign

I find it a little odd that the corpse is bound with his feet back. It almost looks like they are more so trying to get rid of a body. Then again...maybe I'm just looking into it wrong? Either way- interesting thing to look at. It's amazing how the buzzards picked every amount of flesh off of his body....even though it's through photos, it doesn't look like it took too long either.

This was an interesting assignment in digital painting. We were supposed to create imagery that appeared "real" in Photoshop. It was actually quite challenging. Pencil was obviously the easiest. I tried to even add smudges on the charcoal one. ;)

It's no April fools joke...

Kyle and I had been thinking about it for nearly a year...and I finally gave in. We've been watching the humane society's website for the past week and Kyle just fell in love with this little buff-colored, 6 month old, male kitty. http://www.wihumane.org/animals/animal.aspx?id=10082486
He was a stray and it really felt good to save him. At the shelter, Tank(as the shelter called him) was so affectionate and lovey. He nuzzles your face, not your cheek, your FACE and he even climbed up on my shoulder like a parrot. After a long discussion with Kyle and nearly a heart attack later, I signed the paperwork and we left with him! He looks a little big for only 6 months old, but it's really all fur. When you feel him, he is actually quite thin.

As far as names go, I think we've settled on "Montague" but of course it's "Monty" for short. Reason being I called him Romeo when he was being so lovey dovey. Get it? Romeo Montague? ZING! We're so clever... :)

He is still really stressed out from the environment change and isn't really eating, but I can see glimpses of how he will be like once he settles in. More updates later in the week I'm sure.

I found this floating around on DA and I seriously think you guys should read it. It's mostly for artists....or someone willing to hire an artist. Read it, you won't regret it:

Every day, there are more and more Craigs List posts seeking “artists” for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what they’re NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are “seeking artists”, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? …none?

More than likely, you don’t know any. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be posting on craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the “opportunity” to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him “a few bucks” for “materials”. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered “yes” to ANY of the above, you’re obviously insane. If you answered “no”, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me… why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it’s one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their &#x201Cortfolio”. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It’s not compensation. It’s their right, and it’s a given.

4. Stop thinking that you’re giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need “experience”. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the “experience” they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother’s house when they were seventeen?

If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. The only experience they will get doing free work for you is a lesson learned in what kinds of scrubs they should not lower themselves to deal with.

6. (This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to “submit work for consideration”. They may even be posing as some sort of “contest”. These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the “contest”, or be “chosen” for the gig, and find what they like most. They will then usually have someone who works for them, or someone who works incredibly cheap because they have no originality or talent of their own, reproduce that same work, or even just make slight modifications to it, and claim it as their own. You will NOT be paid, you will NOT win the contest. The only people who win, here, are the underhanded folks who run these ads. This is speculative, or “spec”, work. It’s risky at best, and a complete scam at worst. I urge you to avoid it, completely. For more information on this subject, please visit [ http://www.no-spec.com/ ].

So to artists/designers/illustrators looking for work, do everyone a favor, ESPECIALLY yourselves, and avoid people who do not intend to pay you. Whether they are “spec” gigs, or just some guy who wants a free mural on his living room walls. They need you. You do NOT need them.

And for those who are looking for someone to do work for free… please wake up and join the real world. The only thing you’re accomplishing is to insult those with the skills you need. Get a clue.

Sort of like a seaplane but we use helicopters for this.

My final art of Illustration III, semester 1. They are intended to be spot illustrations for an article for preteens. I wanted the colors to be as bright and bold as possible without giving someone a headache. After achieving that...I realized that my image was in RGB. After converting it to CMYK....the colors were extremely diluted. They still look bright printed out but it's nothing compared to the web-friendly version. I will post both for comparison.

Err....I don't really have much to say right now. One of the other main reasons I haven't been posting. BUT! I am applying to be a crew member at Elftown.com. This gives me a lot of privileges over how the site is run. I hope I'm accepted! I composed my application and added a little pic of myself.

So this weekend at my parent's house, I was computing late at night when I heard a cracker bag crunching in the kitchen. I turn and look, figuring maybe it just fell over, but a little mouse hopped out of it and scurried across the stove top. I immediately pull out my camera and took a few pics. This little guy let me get REALLY close! See for yourself...

So after getting some footage of the little guy(and naming him 'Saltine') I figure it was best that I get rid of him somehow. Thing is- it was roughly 1am and there were NO traps in the house. So I browsed the web and discovered this method.

And sure enough- IT WORKED! Though it happened while I was asleep, the little guy fell for it! I wanted to take some pics of him but apparently my grandpa already took it outside and stepped on him before I woke up. O_O'

My mom is not going to like seeing the video when she gets back from her vacation! But all in all- I WAS VICTORIOUS!!

Communication Collab

In illustration III, we were paired up with communication design majors. Basically they had an article layout and it was my job as the illustrator to create images that fit the look and content of the text. Below I have the front page, spot and the end picture.

Initially I was super nervous but overall it was a great experience and I'm very pleased with the results. Basically the article was about a girl's experience at this organization in Milwuakee that teaches people how to plant and grow their own food. They also teach people how to harvest and take care of farm animals. It's essentially a little "nature sanctuary" right in the middle of the city. My art concept was how this individual "transformed" the city into a lush garden where nature coincides with the rigid city architecture.

Totally had a dream last night that I was at my parent's place and found a little box with nearly 12 eggs in it. They were wrapped up in a blanket and shifting around. I took one in my hand and felt the little 'whatever it was' move around. I took care of them for a while before holding one up to the light. By this time I had been convinced that they were croc eggs. After holding one up to the light, I saw a little baby dragon. Spyro the dragon to be exact.

Though my Dad had taken one and cracked it open! I was so mad! But turns out that in the eggs----

THEY WERE RELIGIOUS SCENE SNOW GLOBES!

I was PISSED.

I cannot express my utter LOVE for this music video and song. I watched this thing nearly twenty times and FINALLY noticed what happened after the girl gets eaten by the wolf- it's all the organs IN the wolf! WOW!

Yea so between working on actual homework, I managed to sketch a few of my rp characters out. Yay procrastination...

First up are my alien half-breeds, Jayden and Jaden. Mischievious little bastards who can't seem to keep it in their pants. This is their advised versions... they used to have purple hair but- pink is definately more suitable.

Next up is Morgan, my X-men speedster. Though in the game currently, she is dangerously doped up on speed(go figure) which in turn prevents her from nearly ever stopping. Poor girl has blood constantly shooting out of her nose now. Not only are her nasal cavities destroyed from snorting drugs, but in combination with running so dangerously fast- they shoot out blood.

District 9

...was AMAZING!

Seriously, I knew nothing about this movie and only became interested when I heard some of the ratings and friends complimenting it. Going into the theater today, I still didn't know a thing about it.

Effects were great and the plot was solid. Several moments kept me in suspense and shocked the hell out of me! The last hour kept me on edge: 'What's going to happen?!' 'Now what?!'

The only thing that would've made it better would be a short scene after the credits where there was none.

For real- don't look at the trailers..just go see the movie....NOW.
